OK - so I guess I can ask as we are all dealing with the wonderful world of ITP.

When I was diagnosed 9 years a go with ITP it was becausse of a period that would not stop.

This went on every two weeks for years and I was uncomfortable and hated to leave my house for fear of leaking and embarrassing myself.

Last year when my counts were in the 250K I went and has the Novasure ablasion ( they scrape and burn the uterus so blood does not build up each month) and bladder sling (lift) done as an outpatient procedure. You still get the hormonal swings each month and you still have your parts but you do not have your period.

I was hoping for longer remissions but only got a year.

The plus side is more energy and no more periods.......plus I can run for a bus and not leak.........

Anyone else have this procedure done?

That's how I found out about the ITP too.....terrible periods. They found fibroids and a small cyst on my right ovary. Started Provera and it's doing great for me. I still have my period, but not like it was! No more mention about the fibroids or cyst since ITP started. I go back to gyn in May. We'll see from there I guess.

  • Diagnosed with ITP in 1983, lupus in 1990, APS in 2001, vasculitis in 2006. Current platelet count 148. In 2007 I had a stem cell transplant for autoimmune disease and currently ITP and APS remission, with a reduction in lupus activity.

My periods were extremely heavy, very depressing to worry all the time about leaking and boy, did I leak sometimes. I would go through 3 pads, piled up on each other, pretty much wrapped around my panties and they would only last an hour. I'd buy extra long over night pads, use three and be lucky to get an hour. It was very embarrassing and looking back, I don't know how I didn't just curl up in bed for the 2 weeks my period lasted.

I don't get my period anymore, menopause complete, although now I deal with the down fall of no more hormones, dryness and all that comes with post menopausal. I don't like it, but I do appreciate no more periods. My counts are normal, so even if I wasn't post menopausal, I wouldn't be bleeding, but it was 25 years of heavy periods, anemic all the time and dealing with the embarrassment. Glad that's behind me!

Ddunn, I wish i could "wish the periods away" but I have no children so I have to think about fertility issues down the road and even my birth control options are limited. :(

I don't get my periods anymore as i take the pill constantly without any breaks from it, so instead of stopping and taking just the sugar pills, i start straight away on a new card. This isn't just a way to treat my heavy peiord with the ITP, it is also to treat my endometriosis as well and i find it a very effective method of treatment for both those problems.

You will probally find you may need a different kind of birth control pill, that one is probally not a strong enough one. I was on one kind and was getting break through bleeding and then my gyno switched me to a different one and i haven't had many issues with it at all. I still get a little bit of break though bleeding, but not often at all even with my counts are really low, so you may just need to talk to your dr about switching to a different birth control pill.

Thanks, I do remember being told that Yaz was a low dose pill I'll make an appointment to see her month end. I have to be careful with my pills though I've had some issues (nausea vomiting) with some of them in the past

My point was that you do not need the pill or other form of birth control.
I have two kids and after almost losing my second several time figured it was time to quit. Plus I have two beautiful healthy children.

The procedure stops the blood from building up and you have the hormonal changes each month but no period.

You are not supposed to be able to get pregnant anymore once the procedure is done as nothing can attach to the uterine wall. So it is only for those who wish to have no or no more children.

I no longer get the heavy periods every two weeks and feel like a weight has been lifted.

I understand that it means your not on any form of birth control, but some of us are young and want to be able to have children in the future, so thats not a really viable option for us. I was just telling people there are other options other then what u have mentioned or a Hysterectomy if they want to have children in the future.

Hummm, I was just diagnosed with ITP on 3/25, just 10 days prior to that I had a full hysterectomy with no complications if bleeding. However last year I was having periods that would last 6 weeks at a time, had a DnC last Aug. which took care of the bleeding. but then this last Feb I began to have real bad adominal pains, so the Dr. decided to go ahead with the hysterectomy because I did have fibroids and cysts. But looking back now after reading your post I wonder if it was ITP all along and I have had ITP since at least last a year ago and didn't know it. Makes me wonder.

I can't remember the last time I had a period. I take depo provera (the shot). Absolutly no side effects for me and no bleeding whatsoever. Gotta stay on top of your calcium intake and it's definatly not for everyone. But I love it :) I wonder if I would have been diagnosed earlier if I didn't take the shot.

It's so crazy reading this because even when my counts were at their lowest (17) my periods were never heavy. I have never had a period that required constant attention. I could always get away with wearing the same product for hours, maybe even all day if I liked (which I don't because I don't like to, but that is another topic...haha) Anyways, my periods generally last 4 days and I have two heavy days that aren't anything bad and 2 light days. Also, when I was diagnosed I only had 1 bruise on my body. I had petechiae on my ankles that was hardly noticeable. But...I had the most HORRENDOUS nosebleed you had ever seen. It lasted close to 3 hours and it was DISGUSTING. Isn't that odd...I never had problems in any other way, just the nosebleed. And it sucks because my hema won't let me go on birth control! She's afraid it will screw up my hormones which will then screw with my platelet count. She also said that those with ITP are more susceptible to blood clots ....THIS MAKES NO SENSE TO ME. At this point I don't want to jeopardize anything with my counts so it's doctor's orders, but eventually....I'll need it! I'm getting married in less than a year! I feel like she thinks I'm such a slut because every time I go into her office I ask her if I can go on BC. And every time she tells me that I need to be in remission longer. I've been in remission for a year. But, like I said, I'd rather go without and have good counts! ITP SUCKS!!!!!!!!! Anyways, that was my daily rant.

I had the Novasure a little over a year ago. I found out I had ITP at the end of March 09, after several years of bad periods, and then in March one sent me to the ER, I was bleeding so bad, I found out I had a count of like less than 4K. So as soon as my counts were high enough, which was June 09, my count then was in the 70's, I did it. I haven't had a period since and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I had already looked into it before the ITP dx, but hadn't had it done yet. For those that are not wanting anymore children, it is a great option. I had already had my tubes tied for years so there was not debate for me. I love it!

I too had the Novasure about 1 yr after being diagnosed with ITP in 2008 - it was because of a very bad period that I went to the doctor in the first place. My children were teenagers and I had had my tubes tied after my second child anyway. I must say - If you don't plan on having children any more or at all it is a wonderful alternative to having a hysterectomy. It took only about 3 min and a couple days to recoupe - no lifting kind of stuff.
