I found this too interesting to NOT share. Please make the time to watch this, even if you have to do it in increments. Listen and keep an open mind. Verify the facts if you have to. I was dumbfounded. I used to scoff at this but my views are changing. We are not paying enough attention to what people are trying to tell us. Our lives are at stake here.

Aoi can you use youtube? The video is from December 2012 - it is called:
The Exploding Autoimmune Epidemic - Dr. Tent - It's Not Autoimmune, you have Viruses

Go to youtube.com and put the name in and it should come up for you.

I've not been against alternative medicine - but I have been against that which speak of miracle cures, snake oil, anti-everything that is establishment. I use alternative medicine.

I will say there are a lot of supplements for sale on his site.

I didn't really hear him try to plug any of those supplements at any point though. He mostly presented facts and information.

I wasn't aware of the alleged viruses in vaccines, but I did know about the additives that are used and how they can have neurotoxic and autoimmune adverse effects. I came across these a few weeks ago.

Aluminum is an experimentally demonstrated neurotoxin and the most commonly used vaccine adjuvant. Despite almost 90 years of widespread use of aluminum adjuvants, medical science's understanding about their mechanisms of action is still remarkably poor. There is also a concerning scarcity of data on toxicology and pharmacokinetics of these compounds. In spite of this, the notion that aluminum in vaccines is safe appears to be widely accepted. Experimental research, however, clearly shows that aluminum adjuvants have a potential to induce serious immunological disorders in humans. In particular, aluminum in adjuvant form carries a risk for autoimmunity, long-term brain inflammation and associated neurological complications and may thus have profound and widespread adverse health consequences. In our opinion, the possibility that vaccine benefits may have been overrated and the risk of potential adverse effects underestimated, has not been rigorously evaluated in the medical and scientific community. We hope that the present paper will provide a framework for a much needed and long overdue assessment of this highly contentious medical issue.

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21568886

Immune challenges during early development, including those vaccine-induced, can lead to permanent detrimental alterations of the brain and immune function. Experimental evidence also shows that simultaneous administration of as little as two to three immune adjuvants can overcome genetic resistance to autoimmunity. In some developed countries, by the time children are 4 to 6 years old, they will have received a total of 126 antigenic compounds along with high amounts of aluminum (Al) adjuvants through routine vaccinations. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, safety assessments for vaccines have often not included appropriate toxicity studies because vaccines have not been viewed as inherently toxic. Taken together, these observations raise plausible concerns about the overall safety of current childhood vaccination programs. When assessing adjuvant toxicity in children, several key points ought to be considered: (i) infants and children should not be viewed as "small adults" with regard to toxicological risk as their unique physiology makes them much more vulnerable to toxic insults; (ii) in adult humans Al vaccine adjuvants have been linked to a variety of serious autoimmune and inflammatory conditions (i.e., "ASIA"), yet children are regularly exposed to much higher amounts of Al from vaccines than adults; (iii) it is often assumed that peripheral immune responses do not affect brain function. However, it is now clearly established that there is a bidirectional neuro-immune cross-talk that plays crucial roles in immunoregulation as well as brain function. In turn, perturbations of the neuro-immune axis have been demonstrated in many autoimmune diseases encompassed in "ASIA" and are thought to be driven by a hyperactive immune response; and (iv) the same components of the neuro-immune axis that play key roles in brain development and immune function are heavily targeted by Al adjuvants. In summary, research evidence shows that increasing concerns about current vaccination practices may indeed be warranted. Because children may be most at risk of vaccine-induced complications, a rigorous evaluation of the vaccine-related adverse health impacts in the pediatric population is urgently needed.

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22235057

In spite of a common view that aluminum (Al) salts are inert and therefore harmless as vaccine adjuvants or in immunotherapy, the reality is quite different. In the following article we briefly review the literature on Al neurotoxicity and the use of Al salts as vaccine adjuvants and consider not only direct toxic actions on the nervous system, but also the potential impact for triggering autoimmunity. Autoimmune and inflammatory responses affecting the CNS appear to underlie some forms of neurological disease, including developmental disorders. Al has been demonstrated to impact the CNS at every level, including by changing gene expression. These outcomes should raise concerns about the increasing use of Al salts as vaccine adjuvants and for the application as more general immune stimulants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND:

The presence of SV40 in monkey cell cultures used in the preparation of the polio vaccine from 1955 through 1961 is well documented. Investigations have consistently demonstrated the oncogenic behavior of SV40 in animal models. Early epidemiologic studies were inadequate in demonstrating an increase in cancer incidence associated with contaminated vaccine. Recently, investigators have provided persuasive evidence that SV40 is present in human ependymomas, choroid plexus tumors, bone tumors, and mesotheliomas, however, the etiologic role of the virus in tumorigenesis has not been established.

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Using data from SEER, we analyzed the incidence of brain tumors, bone tumors, and mesotheliomas from 1973-1993 and the possible relationship of these tumors with the administration of the SV40 contaminated vaccine.

RESULTS:

Our analysis indicates increased rates of ependymomas (37%), osteogenic sarcomas (26%), other bone tumors (34%) and mesothelioma (90%) among those in the exposed as compared to the unexposed birth cohort.
CONCLUSIONS:

These data suggest that there may be an increased incidence of certain cancers among the 98 million persons exposed to contaminated polio vaccine in the U.S.; further investigations are clearly justified.

Abstract
BACKGROUND:

Adverse events following immunization (AEFI) requires special consideration in patients with primary immunodeficiency diseases (PID) because they may represent a "red flag" for the initial diagnosis and may cause disease complications. Therefore, the definition of appropriate vaccination schemes is a major issue in PID. The aim of this study is to describe the AEFI in a cohort of PID patients.

METHODS:

Medical records from 379 PID patients were included. AEFI severity was classified according to the WHO 1999 guidelines. Causality was assessed using the Clinical Immunization Safety Assessment (CISA) 2009 criteria.

RESULTS:

Evidence of AEFI was found in 26 medical records and represented a total of 29 reactions. Most of the AEFI were observed in patients with idiopathic hypogammaglobulinemia (IHG), chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) and severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), representing 10, 4 and 4 cases, respectively. A total of 21 reactions were associated with replicative vaccines, 7 of which were serious cases related to Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG). BCG was also the vaccine more often associated with definitive AEFI in PID. In addition to BCG-related complications, seizures were the most serious AEFI among PID patients.

CONCLUSIONS:

Our study included a large cohort of PID patients and confirmed an increased risk of serious AEFI in these populations. The design and implementation of neonatal screening strategies for the early detection of congenital lymphopenias and other PID are urgently needed to avoid serious complications of the BCG vaccine usually applied immediately after birth. Our findings also support the use of the acellular pertussis vaccine to minimize the appearance of seizures in PID patients vaccinated with diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus (DPT).

Thimerosal, which contains the organic compound ethyl mercury, is a known neurotoxin and used to be a major ingredient in childhood vaccines. There are over 15,000 articles in the medical literature describing the adverse health effects on the human body with exposure to varying amounts and forms of mercury.

In 1999 the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) urged government agencies to work rapidly toward reducing children's exposure to mercury from all sources. Because any potential risk was of concern, the AAP and the USPHS (United States Public Health Service) agreed that the use of thimerosal-containing vaccines should be reduced or eliminated.[1] The AAP recommended that it would be a good idea to remove thimerosal from vaccines, even though according to them, there was no evidence linking childhood health issues to thimerosal exposure from vaccines. In 2008, children are still being injected with thimerosal-containing vaccines, and old stocks of thimerosal-containing vaccines manufactured by 1999 continued to be administered to children up to 2003.

However, a growing number of physicians, scientists and parents maintain that thimerosal has played, and continues to play a large role in contributing to the emergence of multiple chronic illnesses in children and adults, including the neurological spectrum disorders. Aluminum, which is present in the environment and in many childhood vaccines, may be affecting the health of our children in ways that we have yet to understand.

Aluminum is a heavy metal with known neurotoxic effects on human and animal nervous systems. It can be found in the following childhood vaccines – DTaP, Pediarix (DTaP-Hepatitis B-Polio combination), Pentacel (DTaP-HIB-Polio combination), Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae B (HIB), Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), and Pneumococcal vaccines.[2]

In 1996, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a position paper on Aluminum Toxicity in Infants and Children which stated in the first paragraph, “Aluminum is now being implicated as interfering with a variety of cellular and metabolic processes in the nervous system and in other tissues.

CDC list of vaccine ingredients:

www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pubs/pinkbook/downloads/appendices/B/excipient-table-2.pdf

A few:

* MRC-5 (human diploid) cells (from aborted fetal tissue)
* Formaldehyde
* Aluminum hydroxide
* Insect cell
* Thimerosol
* Madin Darby Canine Kidney (canine kidney cells)
* WI-38 human diploid lung fibroblasts
* Bovine calf serum
* Bovine muscle tissue
* Human embryonic lung cultures
* Human diploid cell cultures (WI-38)
* Vero (monkey kidney) cells (have been known to contain viruses, such as SV-40)
* Ammonium sulfate (used in fertilizers and and production of circuit boards)
* Glutaraldehyde (toxic chemical that is used for cold sterilization of medical and dental equipment.)
* Phenol - (mildly acidic toxic white crystalline solid obtained from coal tar and used in chemical manufacture)

I am not saying that people should not get vaccines. If I had grandchildren, I would probably support vaccines to some extent but certainly not the current schedule used and definitely not within the first few months. I still support vaccines for those who are asplenic. I'm just trying to raise awareness of what we are actually putting in our bodies.

This article was initially taken from the FDA website. I have posted some of the statements from the article:

Carcinogenesis, Mutagenesis, Impairment of Fertility
Tripedia vaccine has not been evaluated for its carcinogenic or mutagenic potentials or impairment of fertility. (Page 6)

Adverse events reported during post-approval use of Tripedia vaccine include idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, SIDS, anaphylactic reaction, cellulitis, autism, convulsion/grand mal convulsion, encephalopathy, hypotonia, neuropathy, somnolence and apnea. Events were included in this list because of the seriousness or frequency of reporting. Because these events are reported voluntarily from a population of uncertain size, it is not always possible to reliably estimate their frequencies or to establish a causal relationship to components of Tripedia vaccine. (Page 11)

Additional Adverse Reactions:

As with other aluminum-containing vaccines, a nodule may be palpable at the injection sites for several weeks. Sterile abscess formation at the site of injection has been reported.

Rarely, an anaphylactic reaction (ie, hives, swelling of the mouth, difficulty breathing, hypotension, or shock) has been reported after receiving preparations containing diphtheria, tetanus, and/or pertussis antigens.

Arthus-type hypersensitivity reactions, characterized by severe local reactions (generally starting 2-8 hours after an injection), may follow receipt of tetanus toxoid.

A few cases of peripheral mononeuropathy and of cranial mononeuropathy have been reported following tetanus toxoid administration, although available evidence is inadequate to accept or reject a causal relation.

A review by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) found evidence for a causal relationship between tetanus toxoid and both brachial neuritis and Guillain-Barré syndrome.

A few cases of demyelinating diseases of the CNS have been reported following some tetanus toxoid-containing vaccines or tetanus and diphtheria toxoid-containing vaccines, although the IOM concluded that the evidence was inadequate to accept reject a causal relationship. (Page 11)

While looking up the brand name Tripedia I found this:
"(Note: Tripedia was discontinued in 2011 so this is really irrelevant. But just like every other good anti-vax myth, this old rubber duck keeps on popping up)"

So it appears the article is 'irrelevant' [it is dated before Tripedia was discontinued]

I still say we all just need to stay in bed and never get out.

This was from the FDA website. If that particular vaccine has caused autism, then vaccines have been responsible for autism. It also lists SIDS, which means babies have died due to this vaccine. Many of the same ingredients are used in all vaccines. I'd hardly call it a myth.

I'm sure there are many people who do not believe that vaccines cause harm. I am one who does. What's wrong with informing people and letting them make their own decisions? If we can agree that the MMR causes ITP, why can't we agree that vaccines can cause other harms? It's not as rare as we think.

I don't care if it was from the FDA site, I saw it was from there I read it. The point is that vaccine is discontinued - and to post something about it that was before it was discontinued isn't right in my opinion & is a scare tactic [we both have our opinions].

Some dogs are black, my dog is black, therefore my dog is some dog.
That's what you are saying when you said "that particular vaccine has caused autism, then vaccines have been responsible for autism". You cannot say all vaccines have been responsible for autism just like I cannot say all vaccines have not been responsible for autism.

I am getting to be like you-know-who, I don't know if some of this belongs here Sandi.

Sandi, I note that you said, "If that particular vaccine has caused autism, then vaccines have been responsible for autism." If is the operative word here. "Adverse events reported during post-approval use of Tripedia vaccine" is far from saying these events were caused by the vaccine, only that they both happened in sequence. If enough children are vaccinated, some would get austism or ITP just by chance. The SIDS rate in the study is actually lower than in the general population. Should one conclude that the vaccine prevents SIDS? I think not.

And even if there is a risk associated with the vaccines, it must be compared to the risk of not using the vaccine. Cost vs. benefit is the standard procedure in public health, and the gold standard by which these decisions should be made.

I am not anti-western medicine. I see doctors (real ones) and take many medications (real ones). You guys have known me for years. You know that I wouldn't say something if I didn't really believe it. I don't understand how anyone can take a strong stance for or against anything without even bothering to even look into it. This is not just black and white, for or against. There is a lot of grey here. Vaccines are not much different than medications and if side effects were reported, would you ignore that?

I am also not anti-vaccine. I am a person who has done extensive research the past 9 months. I would not tell my kids not to vaccinate their babies when the time comes, but I would speak to them about a better vaccine schedule and possibly weeding out unnecessary vaccines. In 1980, children got 8 vaccine doses before age 2. Now they get 69 doses before age 6. I've watched countless before and after videos of babies who were laughing and taking first steps and two days after their vaccine, could not stand up and stopped laughing.

I am saying that vaccines need to be studied for safety. There are thousands of stories out there, people. Children and teens are becoming debilitated and dying. Autism rates have soared 1 in 68). Autoimmune disorders and cancers are on the rise. So many kids have neurological problems, ADD, ADHD (there were no kids with these when I went to school). There are many researchers, doctors and nurses speaking out but no one will listen. I am listening. When a CDC doctor says that there are study cover-ups, it gets my attention. Every single time someone tries to warn us, they get slammed and debunked. These are prestigious people. What if they are right? The people speaking out have lost their careers and are publicly bashed. Why would they risk it knowing that would happen? They aren't making any money from it. I don't understand why this would not cause doubts or questions from anyone. I have provided the most credible information I can find, and it makes you guys angry. Angry to learn something different?

Right before my surgery a few weeks ago, a nurse from the hospital called me to ask some routine questions. She asked if I'd had a recent flu vaccine. I said "No, and I don't want one". She said, "I understand completely". I said, "You do? Really?" She said, "Oh yes. But I'm not supposed to say that". That tells me something.

Look what just happened to Robert DeNiro. He had to pull Vaxxed from the Tribeca. He was very excited about showing that documentary; he has an autistic son. All of a sudden, he announced that he pulled it from the line-up. That seems very suspicious. My curiosity is peaked now, and I will be watching it as soon as it's available.

Okay, I'm done posting about it. I thought I was sharing helpful information. I thought it might raise questions in your minds, consider the possibility. I'm sorry, but I don't believe studies conducted by the same companies that benefit by profit. Subject over.

Hi Sandy,
Just wanted to say thank you for all your posting here and your efforts to help us learn. I think about what my knowledge universe was before I joined the PDSA forum and where I am now. Five years ago I was 2 decades with ITP and really struggling for answers. But this forum and Joan's initiative with creating this website were a godsend. I doubt I would be where I am today without having googled searched PDSA. Having met April through this website and her homeopathy was a game changer.
My moto is and will continue to be: stay open to new ideas and new things and when in doubt, use common sense.
My best wishes,
john

I am with you Sandi, (Still monitor here? Thought you were retiring!) I have learned so much about health since I got ITP over 10 years ago.

The US is 49th in health outcomes worldwide, just behind Croatia and Dominican Republic. Ten years ago Chili passed us. Didn't use to be this way. The people in the US are getting sicker and sicker. Now 1 in 60 children have autism, 1 in 4 adults will have diabetes in their life, 1 in 3 obesity, 1 in 2 will have major depression. (One hundred years ago, when Freud was doing his research it was 1 in 100). in the US 1 in 2 will get cancer in their lifetime. That's 49%! How will the doctors keep up? How will we pay for this as a society?

I remember the first time I went to my hemo/oncologists office ten years ago. It was a spacious waiting room with a few people waiting. Now when I go there it is packed! You are lucky to get a seat!

Something is seriously wrong.

The decline started with changes in how our food was grown, and the addition of vaccines, pesticides, and chemicals. We all need to take charge of our own health, since the doctors are not trained in these areas.

Health starts in the gut where 80% of our immune system works. The above mentioned things all have a role to play in destroying gut bacteria and thus compromising our health.

I have never gotten personal on the PDSA, but there is a first time for everything. I debated whether or not to post this because of possible backlash. I decided to go ahead and risk it.

I have known you ladies for many years and we've become friends. I seem to have lost friendships over this controversy. It saddens me that a difference in opinion would cause that. In my real life, my friends and I discuss things, either agree or disagree, and we move on. If friendships were lost that easily over differences in opinion, no one would have any friends. I valued you more than that. Since I already seem to have lost here, I have nothing more to lose by posting once more. I refuse to accept the characterization of 'quack gone off the deep end'. I value myself more than that.

You are highly intelligent people. Intelligent people learn. They question, they analyze, they think critically. They keep their minds open to other thoughts, concepts and ideas. The quest for learning never ends, and in order to do that, you must investigate and research. You don't ever look at just one side of the coin.

I presented some information that I thought would be helpful. Everyone is here on this Forum because we are sick. Some more than others. If I could prevent someone from acquiring more health issues, I wanted to do that. I never told anyone not to get vaccines. I said that there is an issue with vaccine safety and I believe it to be true. If you choose to get vaccines without questioning it, that is your choice. If you choose to not read what I post, that is also your choice. But people deserve to be informed and make informed decisions. I do not understand how anyone can take such a strong stance and not even bother to read dissenting evidence. Read it, think about it, then make your decision. Until then, you may tend to have a one-sided view. Possibly soon, there will be more media attention paid to this issue. Robert DeNiro is having an impact along with US Representative Bill Posey.

The PDSA FB page posted a study the other day regarding the flu shot and ITP. I posted that article in the General Section under New Articles. On the FB page, comment after comment was made that these people believed that a vaccine triggered their ITP. Not just the MMR, but various vaccines. There are hundreds of thousands of people who claim that a vaccine triggered debilitating illnesses and even caused death. Should we not believe them?

The link that I am going to post gives dozens and dozens of case studies questioning vaccine safety and efficacy. Yes, I said efficacy. Some articles discuss benefit vs risk. These articles are published by the NIH, JAMA, the BMJ and other credible medical journals. Here are just three examples:

Officials and professional societies treat influenza as a major public health threat for which the annual vaccine offers a safe and effective solution. In this article, I challenge these basic assumptions. I show that there is no good evidence that vaccines reduce serious complications of influenza, the outcomes the policy is meant to address. Moreover, promotional messages conflate "influenza" (disease caused by influenza viruses) with "flu" (a syndrome with many causes, of which influenza viruses appear to be a minor contributor). This lack of precision causes physicians and potential vaccine recipients to have unrealistic assumptions about the vaccine's potential benefit, and impedes dissemination of the evidence on nonpharmaceutical interventions against respiratory diseases. In addition, there are potential vaccine-related harms, as unexpected and serious adverse effects of influenza vaccines have occurred. I argue that decisions surrounding influenza vaccines need to include a discussion of these risks and benefits.

INTRODUCTION:

Thimerosal (or Thiomersal) is a trade name for an organomercurial compound (sodium ethyl-mercury (Hg) thiosalicylate) that is 49.55% Hg by weight, which rapidly decomposes in aqueous saline solutions into ethyl-Hg hydroxide and ethyl-Hg chloride. Developed in 1927, it has been and is still being used as a preservative in some cosmetics, topical pharmaceuticals, and biological drug products, including vaccines. Concerns have been voiced about its use because it is toxic to human cells. Although it is banned in several countries, it continues to be added to some vaccines in the United States and many vaccines in the developing world.
DISCUSSION:

This critical review focuses on the clinical, epidemiological, and biochemical studies of adverse effects from Thimerosal in developing humans. This review will include research that examines fetal, infant, and childhood death; birth defects; neurodevelopmental testing deficits in children; and neurodevelopmental disorders (attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, tic disorder, and specific developmental delays). The review will also look at the research that examined the outcomes of acute accidental ethyl-Hg poisoning in humans. The studies that examine the underlying biochemical insights into the neuronal cellular damage will also be explored.

CONCLUSION:

The culmination of the research that examines the effects of Thimerosal in humans indicates that it is a poison at minute levels with a plethora of deleterious consequences, even at the levels currently administered in vaccines.

I announced a while ago that I was resigning as Admin. The PDSA is still working on a replacement. They do have someone in mind and have contacted her. So, it appears that I won't be Admin for much longer. Once I'm gone, you can come back and life will go on. I'm sad that things are ending this way after I poured my heart and soul into this place for so many years. I thought I had a little more credibility than this.

  • ITP since 2014. Retired nurse. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use.

You won't get any backlash from me. As a nurse I firmly believe that people have to take some responsibility in managing their own conditions. The more evidence presented the more informed their decisions are. If I hadn't joined this site I'd probably have lost my spleen by now.

Last month this sweet little girl died from complications of the flu resulting in irreparable brain damage. I do not know if she had received the flu vaccine or not. Can't get the site to post like Sandi did - but go there, look at that precious little one who died shortly before her birthday. There are 2 sides to the flu vaccine "controversy".

I can't join the fb PDSA group - guess they don't want me there, so I have no idea what you are talking about.

I don't go to the PDSA FB page often, but the articles they post show up in my news feed. I'm sure they want you there, Melinda. You just have to go to the page and 'like' it. That's all I did.

The death of that little girl is a tragedy. The loss of any child is heart breaking. This is a very tough issue because you never know which way things would have gone if someone had had a vaccine or not had a vaccine.

There are actually several studies in that link that suggest that the flu vaccine is not very effective in children and may in fact, cause more hospitalizations. Here is one of them.

Influenza is known to be associated with asthma exacerbation but the effectiveness of the trivalent inactivated flu vaccine (TIV) in children, especially children with asthma, in preventing hospitalization is unknown. We assessed the effectiveness of the TIV in all children and especially children with asthma to prevent hospitalization with influenza. We conducted a nested case control study of all pediatric subjects (6 months to 18 years old) who were evaluated at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, who had laboratory-confirmed influenza during each flu season from 1999 to 2006 to evaluate the efficacy of TIV in preventing hospitalization. A case-control analysis was performed with the cases and the controls being the subjects who did and did not required hospitalization with the influenza illness, respectively. There were 261 subjects with laboratory-confirmed influenza from 1996 to 2006. There was an overall trend toward higher rates of hospitalization in subjects who got the TIV when compared with the ones who did not get the TIV (odds ratio [OR], 3.67; CI, 1.6, 8.4). Using the Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel test for asthma status stratification, there was a significant association between hospitalization in asthmatic subjects and TIV (p = 0.001). TIV did not provide any protection against hospitalization in pediatric subjects, especially children with asthma. On the contrary, we found a threefold increased risk of hospitalization in subjects who did get the TIV vaccine. This may be a reflection not only of vaccine effectiveness but also the population of children who are more likely to get the vaccine.

Here is another article regarding yearly flu shot effectiveness:

BACKGROUND:

There is a recognized need to determine influenza vaccine effectiveness on an annual basis and a long history of studying respiratory illnesses in households.
METHODS:

We recruited 328 households with 1441 members, including 839 children, and followed them during the 2010-2011 influenza season. Specimens were collected from subjects with reported acute respiratory illnesses and tested by real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Receipt of influenza vaccine was defined based on documented evidence of vaccination in medical records or an immunization registry. The effectiveness of 2010-2011 influenza vaccination in preventing laboratory-confirmed influenza was estimated using Cox proportional hazards models adjusted for age and presence of high-risk condition, and stratified by prior season (2009-2010) vaccination status.
RESULTS:

Influenza was identified in 78 (24%) households and 125 (9%) individuals; the infection risk was 8.5% in the vaccinated and 8.9% in the unvaccinated (P = .83). Adjusted vaccine effectiveness in preventing community-acquired influenza was 31% (95% confidence interval [CI], -7% to 55%). In vaccinated subjects with no evidence of prior season vaccination, significant protection (62% [95% CI, 17%-82%]) against community-acquired influenza was demonstrated. Substantially lower effectiveness was noted among subjects who were vaccinated in both the current and prior season. There was no evidence that vaccination prevented household transmission once influenza was introduced; adults were at particular risk despite vaccination.
CONCLUSIONS:

Vaccine effectiveness estimates were lower than those demonstrated in other observational studies carried out during the same season. The unexpected findings of lower effectiveness with repeated vaccination and no protection given household exposure require further study.
