Salsalate — anyone know anything about it? 1 year 7 months ago #72191

I just read about an NSAID called Salsalate.
Apparently it is a 'Platelet-sparing' NSAID.
Does this mean I can take it if I have a low platelet count?
[Reason I ask is I have arthritis, which is not yet very painful but might become so further down the road. In which case I will maybe want some analgaesia.]

Really this is something you should talk about with your hematologist.  A wise doctor told me years ago:  Nothing is non-toxic to everyone.

Are you treating your ITP - did you get to 70k without treatment?  I'd be more concerned what drug interaction there is with this drug.

Too many side effects for my liking.   I will not take anything that is in the NSAID family.
I also have arthritis - when it got too bad nothing helped it so had knees replaced.

Good luck!

Okay thanks for that.

No, I'm not getting treatment for the ITP. My platelet count has been pretty stable since the beginning. Long may it continue.

I'm wary of most medicines. Just thought maybe this one would be useful but as you say, best to ask a doctor first.

Cheers.

That is great your count has been stable so you haven't had to treat!
You know - instead of waiting for the other shoe to drop [as in no pain from arthritis but wanting to find something to help the pain just in case it gets painful] why not just enjoy life and take things as they come?!  Honestly, when my arthritis got bad with the bone on bone pain I did the steroid shots until they no longer worked and that was a lesson learned - should have had replacement surgery instead of shots.

Take care!
