Covid 19 vaccine was created by Jmamvt
Hello,
I have been extremely nervous about getting the vaccine. I did see my hematologist. My platelets are 63. Has anyone have problems after getting the vaccine?

There are so many discussions in this section and the Treatment - General section, why not look through those sections.

I was more nervous about getting covid and ending up on a ventilator and/or dead so there was never a doubt in my mind that I would get the vaccine. I have had the 2 Pfizer injections and didn't have 1 problem at all with either injection.

If you want to risk being ventilated on ITU and possibly dying then don't have it. Otherwise get it and both prevent yourself and others from the ITU/death risk.

When I had 1st dose of Pfizer I had a test 6 weeks prior to jab & count was 58 which is about my norm. I had no reason to think it would be low pre vaccination. 2 days post jab I had my routine test and count came back at 19. A fortnight later with no change to meds it was back up to 42.
Dose 2 next Wednesday, my last count was 47 on the 12th April. I have another routine test booked for 7th May.

I get weekly CBCs and got two doses of Pfizer in March. There was absolutely no change to my platelet count from the vaccine.

I did well with the Pfizer vaccine. Slight platelet drops after each of the two shots (from my normal levels of around 40k to 18k and 17k respectively). However, those brief drops (I really only caught them because I have been doing weekly counts) resolved on their own by the following week.

So transitory platelet number depressions that completely resolved on their own within a week. Not bad at all for the peace of mind of having the vaccine as well as the protection from getting COVID (which surely would tank my platelets PLUS do a whole host of other horrible, worse things!)

I received the Pfizer vaccine on Tuesday, my platelets were 147 taken a week before which was great for me. Just had a follow up CBC yesterday and my platelets were 110.
No one seemed that concerned that my platelets dropped, especially since 110 is still not drastically low, but no one seemed to want to investigate if I am actively dropping. I think because I am a new patient to this family practice doctor and I am not going to an hematologist? Plus the lowest my platelets usually go are 100. I am not too worried though I guess. The vaccine was fine and I will probably be getting the second as long as the platelets go back up. Hope this helps.

sheliae you never know if your count had decreased between the time you had a CBC a week before the vaccine injection and when you had vaccine injection. The lab where I get my CBC doesn't consider 110k as ITP. If mine come back 109k it isn't flagged. Just curious, were you given a diagnosis of ITP with a count of 100k?

With a count of 147k a week ago and now a count of 110k I'd be fine with seeing my family doctor - however if I dropped a lot then I'd want to see a hematologist. I was diagnosed in 1989 with 11k and dropping - went into a "remission" in the late 90s and didnt' see a hematologist for years, when my count hit the gutter in 2002 I started with my hematologist again.

Personally I would be getting the 2nd injection even if my count didn't go back up - covid is a lot worse than a count of 110,000 platelet count. I got both Pfizer vaccines and my count stayed ok - I'll be getting the booster when that is offered too, ventilators and all else that must be done if on one is not attractive to me!

I agree with Mel. Have you actually got ITP? With a count that is above 100 what is the point of investigation ? Personally I would get second dose even if my count was zero. I have mine on Wednesday, my last count was 47 on the 12th April. I am not wasting my time or NHS money to get another count before. My next routine test is on Friday.

I got the Pfizer vaccine. My platelets were in the 80s the last couple of times checked and after the vaccine they were up to 102. So, it seems the vaccine did not negatively affect my platelets.

Without tx, my platelets have been staying around 80. I received my booster phizer (number 2) 2.5 weeks ago with no problems since. My MD said she had seen some reports of rare platelet drops after vaccination in ITP pts but none of hers had experienced that. Just to be sure she wants me to have a cbc next week just to check, but I think the risk is very minimal and more than outweighed by the benefits of being vaccinated against covid.

Hi mrsb04,
Did you get blood test result for May 7?
Thanks
BTW, I had my first pfizer dose on May 7. My platelet count is 101 one week later (which was 124 one month ago).

  • My platelet count began to drop in 2013 and reached 26k in 2019. My hematologist gave me corticosteroid taper, Nov 2019, but platelets dropped to 20k and I received IVIG. Later I began Promacta (25mg) and platelets are range between 100-140k.

In May of last year, my platelets were 20. Since then I did IVIG then began using Promacta; the later has been very effective for me. I shared your concern about the COVID-19 vaccines, and so did my hematologist. In fact, in February he asked me not to get the shot until he'd done more research. Last week he approved me to get the vaccination (platelet count 176 [taking Promacta]) but I'll be getting blood test every two weeks until August. So far, I've had only mild reaction to Moderna vaccine and no signs of crashing platelets (petechiae, bruising, nose bleeds). I understand that the 2nd Moderna shot is more likely to cause severe reactions, so I'm apprehensive. I hope you are able to get the vaccine because it is liberating. God bless.

I'm at two weeks post second shot of Moderna vaccine and my platelets are fine. Got them checked multiple times before and after both shots. Just had a lab jab yesterday at two week mark and they're at their usual level of 63k. I had no post vaccination problems/symptoms and am on Doptelet.

Just realized I posted this in wrong area a few weeks ago re cortisone injection and Johnson and Johnson
Hi just wanted to see if anyone has had both? I had my first ever cortisone injection in early March due to knee pain. ( I take promacta dosage fluctuates with counts been on it for over a year.) it was awesome no side effects knee pain gone. March 31 I had the j&j vaccine. A few small side effects headache and heart flutter. Went away in a few days. I had a second injection for other knee on May 18. My count before had been 82,000. The following week I was like I had been on high dose dexamethesone I ended up at urgent care and then emergency room with a severe headache and multiple other side effects. My count was over 700,000! I also am blessed with a blood clotting disorder and take anticoagulants thankfully I did not get a blood clot and am starting to feel better.
No explanation from dr as to why this could have happened. Just thinking the vaccine and the injection caused the reaction?
My count plummeted rapidly being off promacta down to 17 back on 75 mg trying to get counts up. So exhausting my body feels like I have lost a month of sleep. Other than that no other symptoms. Still glad I got vaccinated just wish I received one of the other brands. Still not sure if that’s what it was but no other explanation.

Thank you for the thoughts about ITP and do I actually have it? Hmmm I don't know, I am diagnosed as having it by a hematologist in 1999. I have had platelets (never below 100) ranging from 100 to 150 since at least 2000, I am unsure if I had it before that. The weird thing is that my mother also has this, she is never below 100 either but always goes from 100 to 150 range. My sister has normal platelet counts. So this could be a hereditary genetic thing that is not yet diagnosed. Also I did get my second Pfizer a week ago and my platelets were tested yesterday and are 129. Thanks!

Platelet counts above 100k are considered normal. It sounds like both you and your mother are in the normal range (the low end of the normal range is still considered normal!), so it's quite surprising that anyone has told you both that you have ITP, since neither one of you has ever had a count below 100. Consider yourselves lucky to have normal counts and to not have to manage ITP. Best of health to you both!

Just a follow up: I got the second Moderna COVID-19 shot on July 6th. I had mild side effects. I am concerned about information indicating that immune suppressed people, especially those taking certain drugs, are producing much less covid antibodies. However, I haven't seen any specific information about Promata (eltrombopag).

If you are concerned then ask your doctor for an antibody test - my friend, an RN, did that and found yes she had antibodies.
Also talk to your doctor about your concerns, that's what you pay them for :)

Talk to your hematologist for sure. The standard thought is that the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the caveats of low platelets. At 63k you would probably be fine, and all the hemo reports I’ve read back that up. Good luck!

Has anyone had a drop recently post vaccine? My platelets are always low (20-40k), no treatment works so I just monitor and test 2x a year and have a great rapport w my hemo (who will phone in dexamethasone at anytime - a 4 day pulse is the only thing that works for me). Anyway - second vax done in April, and this week after I got sick, my platelets dropped to 16k. First time in years that I could “tell” - had that whole wiped out, complete wall of fatigue thing. I’m completing the dex today but I’ve begun hearing that this could be a thing - the vaccine could trigger autoimmune response? Anyone else?

I completed 2nd Moderna shot in early July. I'm taking Promacta and it keeps my platelets around ~120-140k, but the week I took the 2nd shot my platelets dropped from 151 to 105k. I've been tested every two weeks since first dose, and since the drop my last two platelets counts are 188 (highest since May) then 124 this week.
When my platelets dropped to 26k in 2019, I was treated with the Corticosteroid Taper, but after initial surge I began declining again. When my platelets dropped to 20k I was given an IVIG and that helped temporarily, but only since I began taking Promacta in May 2020 have my platelets been restored to above ~100k regularly.

Good luck and hope this helps
