Does anyone have any information about the safety of taking the covid vaccine if you have ITP?

There is another discussion about this - have you seen it.
Also do you get the PDSA-e-News? Mine was in the inbox on Nov 30, there is talk in there.

could you please refer me to the discussion about it. I have not found it. My hematologist told me in the summer that probably it is a good idea to wait until safety data released. By no means she was against vaccine. Today she told me that I should not put myself on the bottom of the chain who is getting the vaccine. She also understood my concerns about the safety data. Now, I am confused. Am I at the higher risk than others? Just confused.

I've got nothing scientific to add to the discussion. Scientific debate is rampant, but almost all would agree we're better off with the vaccine we have than the one we were only wishing for.
Anecdotally only... My hema doesn't think ITP is a reason to go unvaccinated against anything. Of course, any vaccine has the potential to tank platelets, but the condition the vaccine is meant to prevent can do the exactly same.

For what this is worth to you - and it's worth a lot to me: My hema was among the first children vaccinated against polio with one of the very first shipments to be distributed. It was the fateful, tainted one that allowed 250,000 or so children to acquire the disease itself. He was left with profound leg damage that he endures to this day. He has every reason to be leery of new vaccines. I asked him about 6 weeks ago if he would take the Covid vaccine as soon as it's available to him. He said he would absolutely be first in line as long as Dr. Fauci puts his seal of approval on it. He's been a student and admirer of Dr. F's infectious disease work since the early days of his career. Said he could do his own research, of course, but he would trust Dr. F's opinion over his own. That settled it in my own mind.

  • ITP since 2014. Retired nurse. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use.

The vaccine is so new that we cannot know everything about it.
What I know is a vaccine may drop my count (the annual flu one never does, nor did my HepB booster).
However a virus will almost certainly drop my count, usually down to symptomatic single figures requiring Prednisolone rescue treatment. Therefore I will be having a Covid vaccination.
