the problem of mechanical count of platelets isnt the regular calibration by lab staff. The problem is that machines might miss perfectly right macroplatelets. Patients with ITP produce more platelets to compensate. New platelets are bigger than the oldest. Besides some people might just have perfectly healthy big platelets proportion. That would explain that some people with very low platelet count are not bleeding.
The machines are calibrated to count a minimum and maximum size platelets. Platelets exceeding this fork are not counted.
