It seems the accuracy of the automated counting of platelets might be questionable compared with manual methods.
Some studies suggest we might have a bigger number specially for those with high MPV.

My doctor keeps telling me that with a MPV around 11.8 - 11.9 my count is at least 10.000 higher. When you are close to 40.000 that's a good news.

Any comments?

No.
Most doctors rely only on the machine. Optical analysis makes them work the extra mile and you need to be knowledgeable to assess it manually. The reign of the machine:)

Low machine counts are routinely hand checked by senior registrars at my lab.

the problem of mechanical count of platelets isnt the regular calibration by lab staff. The problem is that machines might miss perfectly right macroplatelets. Patients with ITP produce more platelets to compensate. New platelets are bigger than the oldest. Besides some people might just have perfectly healthy big platelets proportion. That would explain that some people with very low platelet count are not bleeding.

The machines are calibrated to count a minimum and maximum size platelets. Platelets exceeding this fork are not counted.
