Anyone with ITP have breast implants?

I am 71 & was diagnosed with ITP about 10 years ago. Platelets seem to go down about 10K each year. Platelets are 27K now. Have tried different treatments to raise platelet count in the
past 2 yrs, mainly because of medical procedures needed. Prednisone, IVIG, - nothing worked. I’ve had platelet
transfusions for oral surgery & eye
surgery. Platelets decline to a lower
level within 3 days. I’ve always believed
breast implants (1990) have been the
cause of my ITP, although hematologist
says no. I am going to see a plastic
surgeon about removing implants as
they have turned hard & painful. I’m
afraid of bleeding even with a
transfusion which I would need in
advance. Anyone else with similar
problem or thoughts? Thank you.

Nope, no breast implants. Interesting nothing brought your platelets up for those procedures. It sounds like your platelets were brought up but then dropped about 3 days later? I will be interested to find out if the plastic surgeon would even consider removing the implants if you have a count of 27k. Please keep us informed - and good luck to you!!

What other treatments have you tried besides IVIG and Prednisone?
I do believe that breast implants can trigger any autoimmune disorder. Implants are foreign to the body and the body may react by trying to reject them by triggering anti-platelet antibodies. I've read articles about implants triggering scleroderma, so why not ITP?

Thank you for your replies. Yes, I also had Rituxin infusions - 4 infusions once a week for a month. That didn’t raise platelets either. I was considering NPlate but so expensive! So far, the only thing that has worked & only for a few days is platelet transfusions.
I see the plastic surgeon on Tuesday about removing breast implants. I’ll post again after seeing her.

I don't keep up with this topic but I thought the (auto immune) danger is silicon fluid leaking and not the implant itself. That the immune system is looking for antigen surface glycoproteins and silicon doesn't have any of that. So, I would think, the silicon has to deposit on real tissue, or platelets, before it can be destroyed by the immune system. Hence the possibility of an auto immune problem.

Once the implants are out, if it were me, I'd check the steroid and IVIG response again after awhile. Maybe those treatments will work once the silicon has dissipated from the body - has been removed by the immune system.
