Hi all - I'm going for my first dental cleaning with ITP and wonder if there's anything I need to be thinking about beforehand, other than having enough platelets so I don't bleed.
Are there risks?
Issues with being on low dose prednisone (I'm at the end of a short taper) and bacteria?
Any tips?

Thanks,
Giselle

Giselle:

I worried about bacteria even before I had ITP and Prednisone. I watch too much TV.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry too much about a short taper. I've been on 5 to 15 mg's for nearly six years and do just fine at the dentist. I've had cleanings, fillings and a root canal...no problems. You do have to be sure that your counts are good enough though.

I had quite a bit of work done at the dentist recently. 7 teeth pulled then they did some work on my actual jaw. All in the office all with Novicaine. The dentist kept remarking that for someone with only 35k I sure had sticky blood. <giggle>
Seems that the platelets we do have try their best to work. I had no issues bleeding.
If you are really worried about it, i had an extraction that was slow to clot we used a tea bag <black tea> i bit down on it for a minute or two and it stopped. Who knew???

Yeah, the tea bag thing works. They had me do it when I kept bleeding from my wisdom teeth extraction 25+ years ago. Something about the tanic acid.

Glad it went well. Tea bags can be very useful. I got rid of my sons planters warts with tea bags. It took weeks, but no gouging his foot at the doctors office.
