i was recently daignosed with low platelet count 122,95,105..i went to hemotologist and she suggested i shuould stop all NSAID n get tested gain after a month along with bunch of other tests.everything was normal & my count went to 148.she said its ITP& i should keep away 4rm NSAID.i'm 31 yrs old female.i have a possible cervical polyp & doc want to do D&C along with hysteroscopy.i was scheduled but b'coz of the low platelet she cancelled & suggested i see a hemotologist first..now i have bad cold, cough, slight fever( 99) flu like ymptoms 4rm 3 days..i dint take any meds( just vicks rub, benadry).i wanted to get surgery in 1 week of oct but now i'm concerned that they would check my platelet levels b4r procedure( 1 week before) & dont want a repetition of last time..my question is does viral fevers, flu, cold, cough cause low platelet counts in patients with ITP? pls suggest if i should wait till nov for my procedure..i have spotting 4 days before & 10 days after periods.heavy flow with painful cramps( especially with no meds).i want to start a family very soon & this itp is postponing my surgery...so many blood tests,doctors..it sucks!
what are the other things that could cause low platelets in ITP patients..any info would be helpful.
thankyou.

Some people have a drop in counts when they are sick, but some have a rise in counts. It depends on the person. Other things that can cause drops are antibiotics, over the counter meds, some herbal supplements, just about anything. However, some people experience a rise from those things. Sometimes counts drop for no particular reason at all.
Usually counts over 100 are safe for most surgeries. What count is your doctor hoping for?

sandi,
my doc didnt tell me anythin 4r sure..wen i had my physicals they were 122.so she said sometimes they do fall low & no biggie & scheduled for surgery suggesting to get another cbc before surgery.i went to doc 4 days b4r my surgery just to sign papers but she said it went down to 95 & she cannot go with it as its not an emergency.then i went 2 c hemo n fingerstick showed 105 then hemo suggested to go off all NSAID for a mnth and get tested again with bunch of other test.(3 weeks ago)then they went upto 148 n she said she wud inform my gyno and anything above 100 shudnt b a prob.hemo said i need to see her only 1 a yr n to keep away 4rm all NSAID.i havent heard 4rm my gyn yet.i wanted to call and schedule for sometime in oct2 week bbut i fell sick with cold, cough, low fever, strep throat so i dint call gyn.
i'm not sure what to do? i'm 31 & yet to start with kids..now i'm confused thinkin if i shoud postpone surgery to nov..my hemo said they wuld test me b4r surgery to make sure..i dont want to be all prepared with my hubby taking off 4rm wrk & then having to postpone again..
i feel so frustrated sometimes thinking about pregnancy & kids with ITP..i'm allergic to acetaminophen 4rm childhood so,had only one choice pain reliever NSAID n now cant use that..
i have used vicks rub,halls,benadryl..my pharmacist suggested afrin.i feel a lot better but still not a 100%..
i always had heavy periods & big purple red bruises if i bumped into somethin even when everythin was normal.lately i have been experiencing a lot of fatigue 4r no reason with aches in legs,knees..my hemo said its nothin..ppl think i'm exaggerating but i really feel so tired with no energy to do anythin specially till 2 in noon...iss it really only in my head?
