Has anyone had surgery with low counts as low as 20 or 25K? I might need an adrenal gland-related laparoscopic surgery but still in the diagnosis phase though. The doctor mentioned single donor platelets and go on with surgery.. Staying on steroids while surgery is it not advisable - please share what options were suggested for surgery to raise platelet count.

RR01 what does your hematologist say?
Are you having your surgeon confer with your hematologist?

  • ITP since 2014. Retired nurse. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use.

I had surgery with low counts with platelets given during it. Another time I had steroids up until two weeks before. Surgery was then done quickly before my count came back down. I had to be off steroids for the surgery because it hampers wound healing.

I have had 3 surgeries in Canada. One for a tibial plateau fracture plate and screws inserted. A second, a year later, for removal of the plate and screws. A third surgery for laparoscopic removal of my gallbladder. Surgeons and hematologist are comfortable with surgery if platelet count is 50+. Each time I required IVIG one week before surgery as that gets my platelets above 50 for two or three weeks before dropping back to my usual count of 23 ( no meds taken and very minimal ITP symptoms for me).
