I amlooking for information on the affects viruses have on ITP and platelets.Ihave read National Geographic’s, issue on viruses and RNA. I have read CODE
BREAKERS.Iam a 64 yr old mail with chronic ITP since 2016.P- 16. I am healthy and active. I am
an avid biker, mountain and road, and a skier. I am currently on 50 mg PROMACTA and
stable. Counts;
25-Feb  14, 2021         1-Mar    90,          17-Mar 366  covid,  15-Apr     101,     26-Apr  156   covid, 29-Jun     99,    28-Jun   133,         20-Aug  129,        29-Sep  158,         9-Nov    397covid3,  9-Dec 129,  12-Jan, 2022,   245,    10-Feb  206,    3-Mar 229      My‘thoughts’ and it is just a crazy theory is; Viruseshave been in mankind since the birth of man. Most viruses are essential to our
health,Componentsof many viruses are stored in our RNA, both good and bad.  Viruses can be identified by differentprotein strands = molecules. Mythoughts, when a virus hits the body the immune system goes on alert. RNA data
is searched.Proteinstrings in RNA spin like a slot machine until the needed sequence is selected and
inserted into the fighting cell. Sometimes a miss is appropriated. RNA/protein
slips in and causes trouble, ie: the nodule on the Tcell that allows the cell
to attach and attack platelets. Ihave been on PROMACTA since the start. When it looked like Promacta wasn’t
working, we tried RUTUXAN, two rounds, that did not work.Thisyear I have had 3 Covid vaccine shots, 2 Shingles shots, (platelets elevated) and 1 cortisone shot in the knee for
pain, (platelets elevated & doctors told me it was unrelated to the shot).
For the first time my Platelets have been steady.
What relationship do viruses have on ITP and platelets?

You'll get different answers from different people.

I was diagnosed in 1989 looking like I had been beaten in a back alley with a 2x4 - I wasn't sick with anything at the time, but had had a gamma globulin injection shortly before the bruises & it is believed that was my trigger.

I had the flu a number of years ago - it took my count up to 401k, didn't take long for it to decline again.    I have had many steroid injections due to arthritis and trying to control that pain - count was never increased or decreased due to the shots.  I have had the 3 Pfizer vaccine injections - again, nothing happened to count.    I have had shingles 2x - nothing happened to count.   I was told NOT to get the new Shringix shingles vaccine and won't until my hematologist or immunologist says to get it & then I'll think about it.

Great your counts are steady!

  • ITP since 2014. Retired nurse. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use.

Mel is correct different people will give different responses.
Any hint of a virus and my count drops. Flu vaccination has no effect on it.  4 x  Pfizer doses, the  first 3 dropped my count  but the 4th one had no effect on it.
Have you considered dropping you Eltrombopag dose a little, eg 50mg on Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun and 25mg on the other days?
I certainly would not be on 50mg/day if my count was as high as yours. The whole point of treatment is make the patient safe not normalise the count.
