My platelet count has been 70 the last two blood tests I’ve had and my PCP referred me to a hematologist. I was told my count should be 140-400.  Is 70 considered dangerously low?
Thanks.  This is extremely new and I’m overwhelmed with all the information out there.

When is your appointment with the hematologist?  Good your PCP has referred you.  Why not wait until you talk to the hematologist before you get worried & overwhelmed?!    Yes the normal range for a platelet count is 140k-400k, or 150k to 450k - all depends on the lab.   70k is low but it is a count all of us would love to have :)

  • ITP since 2014. Retired nurse. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use.

I wouldn't worry . I very much doubt  you will require treatment with a count of 70. Hopefully a 'watch and wait' approach will be applied. These days treatment is rarely commenced with a count above 30 unless the patient is symptomatic.

I wouldn't worry either unless you have lots of unusual bleeding. In fact this forum helped me a lot to know when to worry and when not.
