Hi Everyone! My 2-year-old son was diagnosed with ITP about 4 months ago. I have made a video with some practical tips for easing the pain and stress of blood draws. I hope someone will find it helpful. If you get nothing else from it, remember to inquire about the use of numbing creams! youtu.be/a1YEoheUU6A

  • Diagnosis of ITP in 2014. Retired (Nov 2019) renal specialist nurse, 46 years on the NHS front line. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use

Very informative video.
As one who has performed paediatric phlebotomy I would add this to the commentary.
Easier to wrap clingfilm around the arm/hand over the cream, less painful to remove than Band Aid plasters + no need for parents to use plasters too.
Lignocaine 4% cream should last for at least 2 hours.
Cover 25mmx25mm areas with cream.
A parent/carer's hand is an effective tourniquet and less upsetting for little ones than the rubber/elastic ones.
