Pain while breathing on dexamethasone? 2 years 9 months ago #69284

Hi, I'm a first-time poster so I'm not really sure how this works, but let me explain what's going on. Last Friday I want to get my blood checked because I have all the symptoms possible and my PCP said that it's likely ITP and to see an oncologist. After speaking with him he put me on dexamethasone right away, for 4 days. Well, today is day 4 the last day of the dexamethasone and I noticed while stretching this morning that I feel a sharp pain in my chest if I breathe in deeply or sharply. It's been sort of on/off all day and it makes me feel pretty nervous. Is this a normal side effect? Should I look at getting to the ER? I really appreciate any responses, thanks!

  • ITP since 2014. Retired nurse. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use.

If in doubt get it checked out. It may be nothing but better to be safe than sorry.

Thank you for the response (: I actually woke up this morning with 0 breathing pain so I'm feeling much more relieved. Now just need to wait for tomorrow when the hematologist officially gives me a diagnosis after all the tests ran on me last week.

Hi butterbean- I can't tell you what it means, but I had a stabbing pain in my chest and trouble breathing first on NPlate, later also on Dexamethasone, when my counts were above 100 and I had higher than usual blood pressure.
It's listed as side effect for both Nplate and Dexa. On the Nplate side effects list it says you should seek immediate medical attention when you have sudden shortness of breath and chest pain, I would imagine it's the same for Dexamethasone.
My doctors never figured out what it is, and I had it for a few months, but I immediately quit both.
