Dear all,
I read time to time that sport improves ITP counts and symptoms for some. Is there any scientific evidence for it?
It has been even suggested that the bouncing and the increase of blood stream related to sport make the evil antibodies to lose the grip over our poor platelets at each jump. Any true on that?
Cheers

Off hand, I don't remember reading anyone in a past post here on PDSA that has asserted an increase in counts with exercise. But I do remember complaints of nose bleeds during running/jogging. I suppose one's higher blood pressure would cause that.

  • ITP since 2014. Retired nurse. My belief is empower patients to be involved as much as possible in their care. Read, read, read & ALWAYS question medics about the evidence base they use.

Be interesting to know what the weather was like when running caused nosebleeds. If the atmosphere was dry that could have been the cause.

Anne, it was EmilyK that came to mind. Good question next time she pops in.

I don't know about improving count, however I run marathons at a professional level with ITP. I actually find my platelets go up when I return from a 4 week altitude training camp interestingly though....

My counts seem to drop when I exercise. I can't say for sure that is what is happening, but the last few times I started an exercise routine my counts dropped. I walk daily and that does not seem to cause the drop, but if I push myself on a bike, rowing machine or with weights then the drops seem to occur.
