I'm 50 something, and ITP just diagnosed.
Was born with Haemophilia B.
Thought that was bad enough, and then was told I had been given contaminated blood products in my treatment that had given me Hepatitis C.
Successful treatment with interferon and ribavirin, that nearly killed me...... now this!!!!!
Count hovering around 15 at moment.
Now I will level with you. I am no alcoholic, BUT, I like a beer or 2 in the evening.
Keep seeing I should stop this, but it is my only vice, and I enjoy it.
Honest opinions sought......... two average strength lagers cant hurt can they????

Welcome. Sounds like you have a lot of experience with doctors and the medical system. Glad you have a strong spirit and have made it this far!

I say, keep drinking. For some people alcohol has an adverse effect on their platelet count, but for many people it does not. Since the ITP is so new, I understand your question and concern. However, I think, considering your history, you will soon know. You also will have a treatment plan for the ITP in the near future and that will give you a better sense of what’s going on as well.

I think right now there’s no reason to make life unnecessarily dreary. :)

How awful for you. Have you been called to give evidence at the infected blood inquiry?
Regarding alcohol...when I was first diagnosed I was put on the wagon. 4 months without a beer had abolustelty no effect on my platelet count so I went back to my real ale.
I don’t drink every day but enjoy 2 or 3 pints if I go out. Admittedly if football is involved then it is lager and probably more than a couple. During last year’s World Cup my lager consumption was way over normal as England progressed. On the day of the quarter final I drank a gallon of Carling. Platelet count at start of tournament 42 and 41 at the end.

Hi, thanks for that.
Yes I have been called to give evidence at inquiry, but it goes on for ever.
This ITP is a strange one for me. Having been born with bleeding problems, you would think it's just more of the same, but this on top worries me a little.
Drs seem very laid back about it, but cant help wondering what will happen if I were to have an accident with low platelets and low factor 1X.
Sounds like a couple of beers isnt going to do too much harm, so I'll keep going!!

Olas,
How are the liver AST and ALT values? Maybe out of range high since HCV?
Have doctors made mention of what might have triggered ITP? HCV itself or Ribavirin treatments perhaps?
Any ITP treatments yet?

  • Diagnosed in 2000, at 59, after being on moderately high doses of NSAIDs for arthritis. Splenectomy and rituxan both failed (2004). Did well on prednisone till summer 2018--then terrible reactions. Promacta since 11-19.

Olas, you don't take a lot of Tylenol, do you? Moderate alcohol use is probably okay if you aren't taking a lot of other things that affect the liver.

No the only meds I'm on now are omeprazole.
I dont seem to have a lot of luck with any other ttreatments, so avoid them unless absolutely desperate.

You will get different answers from the different countries. In the UK we tend to get told that alcohol is fine. I asked when I was diagnosed and the consultant said it was not a problem.
