Hello my name is Jamie and I have a 9 year old son with a rare connective tissue disorder. He has suddenly developed facial flushing, dizziness, burning sensation of the skin and more bruising than normal. The doctor did a blood test and so far the only thing that looks abnormal is his platelet count. it is still in the normal range but is low normal. I looked at all of his blood tests from the past and every year I noticed his count is falling.

Can the symptoms I described above be associated with ITP, and can it take awhile to develop ITP?

Thank you

I'm just a worried mom!

Well, none of those symptoms are typical of ITP except the bruising. I would suggest a Rheumatologist or Neurologist for the other symptoms. Could it be related to his CTD?

I wouldn't say it takes a while to develop ITP. Platelet counts constantly fluctuate, so they can go up and down often. For normal people, it wouldn't be odd to see a count of 243 and the next day 210. For people with ITP, it can go from 150 to 60 in a day, then to 30 the following day. Others can have a much slower drop. Usually, people find out they have ITP when they have symptoms and by then, the counts are pretty low. Others find out during a routine CBC that their counts are lower than normal.
