I have been struggling with high white bloods cells and low platlets since I first found out I was pregnant. My white count started at 15 and has gone up to now 20.8. My platlets in July were 105 and rose to 140 and now back down to 129. They keep telling me no epidural. My last child was 9lbs 10oz and delv was not fun with epidural and I had a ton of stitches and a stage 2 laceration that took MONTHS to heal. The doctor I saw in the hospital back in July said I needed to see HEMO doctor and my docotor said no we will just monitor. Well here we are so close and things are getting out of control again. I am so scared I about what is causing these levels to rise especially the white cell count. The platlets dont appear to be that concerning. I had a growth scan of the baby yesterday at 35 weeks and 4 days she is 7 lbs and 4oz we have 5 weeks left still and she is growing so fast! They want me to go vaginal with no epidural and I don't think I can do it. I pushed for 2 hours getting my son out. Had a hemmerage and lost alot of blood to the point were I could not even enjoy him I was in so much pain and I had to stay and extra day in hospital. My doctor is not receptive at all to a c-section and I don't understand why. She said they only do c section if the baby is 5kg or over 11pounds or I have other complications like High BP or blood sugar issues. I am getting really scared! I spent most of the day crying yesterday! I cried in her office and she was LIKE WTH are you so upset for? I am looking for any advice on what my next steps should be or maybe I can suggest some other testing. I wish there was a way to make those white counts lower I really would like a epidural. I the white count seems alittle outragous from what I have read. It can be Lukemia also. SCARY!

Hi there - sorry you're going through this. Are they trying to figure out why the wbc are high? They don't seem to be helping you much. Can you get another opinion or ask your family doctor if you can consult with another OB?

personaly i would get a hemotoligst ASAP. they deal with people who have blood disorders such as ITP. as for the white cell count if you had a hemo doc they would probably run a bunch of labs and maybe even do a bonemarrow biopsy to rule out cancer. it is not normal if you still have your spleen to have levels that high. as for the pregnacy i would seek a second opion. as long as your levels are in the 100's c-section should not pose any serious risk of bleeding more than what an average person may have. i know it can be very scarry and you have every right to cry. letting out the emotions is better than bottling everything up inside. i hope things work out with the new little one. please keep up posted on how you are doing. kay

Pregnancy can cause higher WBC counts. Having said that, WBC can also be high if you have an infection brewing inside. Have you had s UTI or anything which could have increased your WBC. Do you need a referral to go see a Hemo. If your OB does not want to give a referral try getting it from your PCP. Hope you feel much better. You are at a good gestation though. So worse case even if you were to deliver Noe the baby would be ok. Most doctors would say no epidural only if your counts are less than 90k .

Thanks everyone! I was at hosiptal last night contractions are 7 mins apart 50% effaced and 1 to 2 cm dialated. White count is down to 17 and platlets are up so EPIDURAL is go! They are continuing antibotics threw delivery.. Started to lose the mucus plug this AM. Doctor thinks we are in the beginning stages but not close enough yet to be admitted. Have another blood draw in the morning tomorrow and another appt at the office to be checked and have NST and another ultra-sound... Getting excited but very tired. Did not get much sleep and my 4 year old came down with running nose and cough:( we are resting today:)
