hi my name is megan i was diagnosed with itp when i was 5 yrs old my platlet count was only around 2,000 im now 20 and havent had any problems with itp since i was diagnosed i someday want children and my doctor said it could come back when i get pregnat i was just wondering if this had happened to anyone to go so long without itp then it coming back while pregnant...does itp ever really go away or does it stay in your body forever

Megan:

No one can predict what will happen, but there is a very good chance that you will do just fine. It seems like you had acute ITP as a child and the chances of that returning are very slim at this point. My sister had ITP at 16 and treated on and off for a year, then went into remission. She had a child a few years later and did not have any platelet problems whatsoever. She still hasn't, and is 45 years old now.

If by chance ITP does recur, there are ways to manage it during and after the pregnancy. Many women with ITP do very well.

Don't be afraid of having children because you had ITP when you were 5! The important thing to know is that people can and do have normal lives having had ITP, acute or chronic. Sometimes it just takes some adjustments. If having children is important to you, don't give it up.
