My questions are... 1. With ITP how likely is it that your baby will be born with low platelets? 2. Does your platelet count affect the babies 3. will taking prednisone help the babies platelets to go higher or stay normal? Thanks all!! I am new here and newly diagnosed with itp. I am 38 weeks pregnant, my platelets as of 6/8 were at a 104,000. They were at 123.000 on 5/12.

It is very rare for the baby platelet count. I just had my son on 4/2 and had a platelet count of 98 at delivery. I did ivig steroids and a transfusion. They did check his count while in the hospital. But he was normal.

I agree with tigereyes. I had my baby on 5-16-11 and had a platelet count of 52,000 at delivery. I also did IVIg and Prednisone. My son's numbers have been normal.
Diagnosed with ITP 2/7/11
Treating regularly with IVIg
Currently in the low 100's

did you have to continue to get the babies blood checked after you went home from the hospital or did they just check it there and that was it? Also, how were you? With #'s in the 90's and 50's did you guys have any problems clotting or any other problems at the time of delivery? Thanks ladies:P

They checked the babys count 2 times. Both were normal and warrented no more testing. Im 27, Ive had ITP for 5 yrs almost 6.

No I had a csection with no problems. The only problem I had was the baby didnt want to come out. But thats not related to ITP.

I think it's around 25% chance the baby's platelets will be lower than normal and less than 5% chance they will be "critical" (less than 50K). My ITP was in remission when I gave birth (150K) and her platelets were normal. ùwith any ITP woman (no matter what your platelets are doing at the time of birth) the baby's can drop within the first week of life but after that they should be fine. the baby just needs to clear your antibodies if they were passed at all. That can take days, weeks to a few months sometimes.

IVIg and steroids are both fine for baby. Long term steroids during pregnancy can lead to blood pressure issues in the mom I think. It can cause growth issues for baby but I don't think that is likely.

all the best!

Hi, My son was born with a count of 92 and it dropped to 21 when he was 3 days old. He had IVig and has been great ever since. He's 5 now!

I believe that there is a fairly low risk of passing your antibodies through the placenta during pregnancy. My ITP was pretty aggressive during my pregnancy and kept falling to single digits in between treatments -maybe why it was passed on but no one really knows for sure. My doc didn't think my son would have low platelets but (although worrying at the time) he made a fairly rapid recovery.

All the best xx
