ITP and prednisone 12 years 6 days ago #15618

i have ITP and last tues my platelets were 74 so my hematologist prescribed 60 mg of prednisone and after reading side effects I am very nervous to take it, something in my gut says I need to avoid it if possible. Only alternative I have seen is homeopathic and it's papaya leaf extract and i have read that some pregnant women have had success with it. I wish i could explain my gut on this, it is rare that I disagree with a doctor. I am 37 wks today. My platelets have been bouncing around last few months: 74 last tues, 94 4 wks ago, 82 8 wks ago and 100 12 wks ago.

Reaching out to see if others have had similar situations and if you took the prednisone and what your Side effects were to you and baby and the outcome. Thanks for any insight.

Hi pipishoe,
You'll hear some great info from some members who recently had successful pregnancies.

Meanwhile I was wondering if you are also researching the possible risks of taking papaya leaf, side effects and possible effects on the baby?

I found this:
www.drugs.com/npc/papaya.html
Where it tells you this:
Pregnancy/nursing
Possibly unsafe depending on the part of the plant being used and dose administered. Avoid use.

Interactions
None well documented.

Side Effects
Papaya may cause severe allergic reactions in sensitive people. Papaya latex can be a severe irritant and vesicant on skin. Papaya juice and papaya seeds are unlikely to cause adverse effects when taken orally; however, papaya leaves at high doses may cause stomach irritation.

congratulations on having a baby and you are very close! prednisone is totally safe to take while pregnant and while nursing. since you are near the end I don't think you are at high risk of developing hypertension, which can happen with steroids and pregnancy. I agree with Erica, there isn't much that is safe to try when pregnant. try not to fret too much if you have to take prednisone for a boost before delivery. It's great you made it this far. Also, I'd say those counts are really the same (not much difference between 82 and 94, etc). all the best!

Thank you to those who replied. In a week my count dropped again to 59 so I started to take the prednisone. I have an apt mon with the hematologist to make a plan on how to best max it's use and then hopefully wheen myself off of it. Your comments where very encouraging and most appreciated.
