While currently in remission, i have serious anxiety about trying to get pregnant with ITP and staying healthy through pregnancy. I would love any support and stories about struggles or success... Right now, i feel like i cannot get the perspective to get excited about getting pregnant because I am so scared I will relapse. Thanks.

Hi and welcome, I was wondering how you came to be in remission? I have a teen daughter with ITP so I'm not very much help as far as knowing about pregnancy and ITP, but there are quite a few on here who have and babies with low counts and its seem to go pretty well for them.
I ask you about your remission because it's always nice to hear how others achieve remission, gives us hope.

It might happen because of something you can't even control. It would certainly be worth the risk if you really want a baby. If you relapse, you'd deal with it and life would go on. It's not the worst thing in the world.

Hi Shauna,

I had an acute onset in January 2009 (platelet count at 2000) which was treated with a blood transfusion, immunohemoglobulin transfusion, and three months of prednisone. I had a relapse nine months later with counts around 20,000 which was treated with six weeks of prednisone. Now I get my levels checked monthly and most recently they were 240,000 (highest ever)! All good news but I don't know that I ever fully wrapped my brain around the fact that i have ITP.

Laura - I was diagnosed in 2009 when my baby was 8 months old. I had a bad ITP year with lots of treatments (many IVIg, decadron pulses, 2 pred tapers). After a year and the second pred taper, the ITP took a break and I went into remission. A few months later, I became pregnant (due in a few weeks now) and remission has held so far. I was so worried during that year that I wouldn't be able to have a second child but fortunately I got remission. I read a lot of papers about it and found that lots of women with various levels of ITP have had babies. It's not discouraged. Doctors told me my platelets would go down and others said they would go up with pregnancy. I believe either can happen. Like Sandi said - relapse can happen anytime by anything. If you're ready, maybe now is a good time to start your family while your ITP is good. Good luck!
