MMR vaccine... A question? 9 years 8 months ago #31680

First, let me preface this post by stating that I am pro vaccines. I believe they are necessary. My question is not whether or not my daughter should get it, but when she should get it.

My daughter was diagnosed at 10 months old (last month). Her counts were at a 2 at diagnoses. She underwent 2 IVIG treatments and we were released from the hospital with a count of 126. A week later at her follow up appointment her counts were at 617! We had her one month follow up and her counts were 380. So she is doing really well.

She will be turning 1 on April 20, which is also the time that they typically give the MMR vaccine. I have read a lot about ITP since her diagnosis and know that MMR has been linked to being a possible ITP trigger for new diagnosis. What about patients that have already been diagnosed. Can it cause a relapse? Should I hold off on getting her the vaccine and either spread it out or wait until closer to 18 months? And insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello, on the sheet given at the time of the shot, on the MMR section 3 says Some people should not get MMR vaccine or should wait in that part it says including anyone who has ever had a low platelet count (blood disorder). It says to talk to your doctor about whether they should..

If it makes you feel any better I did read that it should NOT increase the risk, they say the risk of getting ITP or ITP recurring is still rare..

Good luck, I hope your little one keeps doing so well :)

Sorry it also says anyone who recently had transfusions or were given other blood products should ask their doctor when they may get teh MMR vaccine.

After IVIG they suggest you wait a certain amount of time or they may not be effective

IVIG and vaccination issue.

IVIG prevents vaccinations to take any effect in your body.

Immunizations should not be given for at least 1 month -- and preferably 3 months -- after a course of IVIG.

Smiller:

An MMR vaccine does have the possibility of causing the ITP to recur, no matter how long you wait. A cold could do the same thing.

It basically comes down to benefit vs. risk and only you can determine which is the greater risk.
