Shingles. was created by Christine
Just been to fam doc re: severe itching and hives - thinking it was some kind of allergy. I just wanted a prescrip to relieve the itching. Anyway he said I may have shingles and to watch things closely for the next couple of weeks. Has anyone out there had shingles and do you know what it can do to my plt count (normally 15K and no worries)? I have my next blood test next week and then quite possibly a trip to the "Spa"
Belive it or not I woke up rubbing myself to relieve the itching and I have bruises from that. You can just imagine what I look like - bruises and hives. Beauty contest here I come!!!!!! C

Christine your doctor should be able to look at that and tell if it is shingles or not!!
Where are these hives? Do they hurt?

Yes I've had shingles, twice - once before and once after ITP, have no idea if it messed with my count.

I had shingles and it completely tanked my count. I actually only had three intensely itchy spots but a lot of pain which is what sent me to the doctors.

Shingles are very much like chicken pox, you get blisters and it BURNS. I had it the first time I did rituxian. I worked at an oncology office and had it running along my side. I mentioned it to one of the doctors who looked at me and sent me home right away. It was very painful and they put me on antivirals and pain meds. After about 2 weeks the blisters were gone, and I was able to go back to work. Your doctor should be able to look at it and tell. It itched but burned so bad I didnt want to itch it.

That's my feeling too Jennifer - a doctor should be able to look and tell right off if shingles or not. And shingles is not something you want to mess with - need med right away. A friend had it in the groin area, didn't see the doctor & by the time he did it has spread so badly and it was too late to put him on an antiviral so he had to go on prednisone.

It doesn't hurt but the itching was so bad and was just driving me crazy. (The cream worked wonders) Is it contagious? C

It might not be shingles. I don't agree with the others that it's always easy to tell. It could be some other sort of rash. Shingles itself can be passed on as chicken pox so best to keep the spots covered when out and about just in case.

Trying to look at the humour in this situation - there is no fear of this part of my anatomy being uncovered!!! :) :) :)

Haha.. I had it on my trunk. After the spots had come out, the pain started. So if you get that then you will know for sure but at least you will know what it is. My daughter had a strange rash on her arm once and the doctor thought it might be shingles. It was never very painful so we were never really sure.

It wasn't shingles - the rash cleared in a couple of days with the cortisone cream. Just as well cos I don't have time to be sick! It was probably a bug that decided I was tasty when I was working in my garden! :) :) :)
