I just answered a call [well didn't answer it, I pressed 'answer' and then 'mute' right away and then 'speaker' so never said hello or hi or WHAT?!]. It was a robocall saying the IRS was trying to get a hold of you [not calling me by name] and this was the final notice that they are suing me :woohoo: and if I call the number they gave me they won't sue me.

Unreal - how many people fall for this. The same call came in last week too - so that was 2 final notices, oh my.

Just thought I'd share the exciting things that happen to me while I'm here at the computer transcribing records for the genealogical society.

I just read an article about that scam the other day. I sound like my grandmother but I don't know what this world is coming to.

Melinda you missed a fun opportunity! The game is, how many minutes can you keep them on the phone? It's also a mitzvah, a good deed, because every minute you have them, they are not talking to someone who is truly vulnerable. Make up anything. I started asking for their address and saying I would send a courier over with the money right away. Then I started describing the courier, a tall blonde woman with a distinct mustache. On and on. But only a few minutes, I'm not good at it yet.

Erica, that's hilarious! I would not have thought of that nor had the patience, but it's a great idea! I usually don't even answer a call that I don't recognize and after it's over, I block the number. I can still hear a message if one is left, so I can always call them back if it's important.

Erica a real person called you, mine was a robocall so I couldn't mess with them. But I did keep them on the line by answering/muting and letting the call go until the robot had nothing more to say. You are funny Erica!

Sandi I usually don't answer either unless a name is familiar on caller ID, a lot of times it is just a city or a state - figure if important and someone who knows us they will leave a message.

Melinda, I got the robot call and I actually called the number. Someone I knew had posted about playing with these people, because what they are doing is so wrong. I would never mess with a regular telemarketer, I just say no thanks and hang up. They are just working hard at a low paying job. But these IRS type calls are scammers and they do hurt people. So I was riled up and wondered how well I could do keeping them on the line and saying crazy stuff.

I read about this while I was visiting my mother. I was setting up call block on her phone so she wouldn't have to deal with any such calls while she amused me with her analysis of how badly written the scripts were. At least I can be confident she won't fall for them. I'm glad folks here have found even better ways of dealing with them.

You have a smart mother Aoi - good!

Erica you are a stinker. Oh I will mess with a regular telemarketer - one that calls me or my husband by our first names as if we were their best buddies, one that calls at dinner time, one that calls at 8.45pm, one that calls at 8am on a Sunday, and so on. I applaud them for working hard at a low paying job, however that does not give them the right to throw respect out the window. Not to mention, if a number is on the Do Not Call List they should not be calling.
